Well... My girlfriend says to me today... “I know you’re in Africa through you blog and facebook and that little virtual bubble you’re in... but reality is .. you’re in Canada.”
Hmmm... ouch!
Sigh.. I guess that’s valid information delivered.
I have a tendency to give things my all or nothing... sometimes losing focus on other things that could use my attention. Like being asked a simple question and hearing nothing.. asked again, a little mumble in background all followed by a “STEVE!”
It’s not that bad but I think one gets the idea.
I really know that to make this Africa trip happen I have to give it all I’ve got.
It’s a tricky time of year too because this is my prime shooting season and Ottawa is buzzing with activity calling out my name to cover it!
Bluesfest Is usually the top event I get questioned about!
"Hey Steve.. you shooting Bluesfest?"
It’s the hub event of Canada’s capital Region, other than Canada day of course! There are many other fine events in this town but Bluesfest actually becomes a lifestyle for 1000’s, 12 days straight!A lifestyle for fans but moreso for those behind the scenes!
Many of these awesome people I've gotten quite fond of and
it's almost like a family reunion!
So? What do I do about this and how do I mange my plans?
I’ve worked so hard to earn all my valued credentials and do I just set it all aside for something else?
That’s the thing with dreams... they remain that until you make sacrifices to varying degrees to bring them to life!
But...at what expense?
More importantly one needs to ask... What is the return?
There are dreams and there are distractions. They can often be confused with each other. A distraction can deplete you of all your resources.
A dream can reap you great reward.
One has to try and calculate the reward before jumping into either.
Sometimes things become a distraction because you didn’t know when it was time to move on.
I think with all I’ve been working on the past several years, it’s really pushed me to be quite versatile and adaptive in photography, yet I lack focus. I wanted to learn and master as many styles as I could.. but the learning will never stop! No matter what technology puts in anyone’s hands at minimal costs.
To be a good photographer there are things people need to learn and sometimes take a lifetime to master!
There are lots of nice pictures that even children are taking these days!
BUT! What distinguishes the photos from one person to the next if technology does all the work?
It’s time for me to leave the distractions and focus! (again.. thanks Steve)
This Africa trip will change my life and who I am as a photographer.
The tourism shooting, the photo journalism, the environmental portraiture etc have all been a playground to help prepare me to reach my full potential.
A huge part of which I believe will be revealed in Africa!
As an old friend Glen used to say... “Go big or stay home baby!”
